Not very long ago, electronic training collars were not very popular. However, as their practicality grows, so does their popularity. Much of this is due to the technological advances in collars. In older models, the only option available was direct stimulation. This was not always right for every dog. Now, technology allows us many options for training our dogs. Advanced features include tones, beeps, vibrations and even paging style features. All of these allow you a more effective way to train your dog and to correct his unacceptable behavior. Newer options such as the citronella spray collar are also available. There are two types of non-stimulation collars that many trainers and dog owners are not even aware of that may be helpful. They are:
The Tone Collars
Depending on your dog, this remotely controlled receiver might be a good option. This unit allows you to use tones for commands, recalls, rewards or warnings, depending on your needs and how receptive your dog is. Another benefit is that these collars may also be used to locate your dog – these are typically referred to as a ‘beeper-style’ collar. As with any other training method, the secret to training your dog is how consistently you use the same commands. This is not any different when you are using a tone-style collar. Today, we have cell phones, computers, even microwaves that emit some type of tone. Use caution that your dog does not become so accustomed to the tones that he ignores you – these collars are not recommended for training multiple dogs either. A tone featured collar is best used for only one dog and you will have to work with him closely to ensure that he is able to identify the tone that you are using with specific commands. Once your dog is accustomed to hearing a tone with a command, you’ll find that he will respond well to this type of collar.
The Vibration Collar
Many electronic training collars are available with page/vibration options. Again, these features are best used in conjunction with specific commands. For remote use, these are ideal as there is no sound being emitted from the collar and your dog will soon understand your silent commands based on the vibration he is receiving from the collar. Another benefit of these collars is the option to remove the receiver from the collar when it is not in use.
